The Greatest Love Story of All Time…
By and large mothers will do anything for their child’s happiness and well-being. It is the only thing that they truly deeply care about in this world. A mother’s love is unique and powerful, a force you cannot challenge or question. A mother can give up her life for her child, and in most cases, only for her child. The love is so strong that it beats any logic or science. The love a mother has for her child is unconditional and everlasting, irrespective of how the child reciprocates. It is in fact the greatest love story there is, today and every day. People talk of Romeo & Juliet or of Laila & Majnu… and yes, these great love stories did go through their struggles, however the devotion a mother demonstrates every single day is unmatched and most certainly undervalued, underestimated and unappreciated. So I say, one day is not enough, every day is not enough, every hour is not enough to show how much we love our mothers; why, when her heart beats for her child more than every second.
Here are some love stories between a mother and a child.
After the Earthquake had subsided, when the rescuers reached the ruins of a young woman’s house, they saw her dead body through the cracks. But her pose was somehow strange as she knelt on her knees like a person who was worshipping; her body leaning forward, and her two hands were supported by an object. The collapsed house had crushed her back and her head. When the rescue team managed to reach the woman’s body through a narrow gap, they declared her dead as her body was cold and stiff. The rescue team moved to the next ruined house. For some reason the team leader had a feeling that he should return to the young woman’s dilapidated house. He reached out to the young woman once again through the narrow gap and this time under the woman’s body. Suddenly he screamed, “A child, there is a child!” The entire rescue team put in all their effort and removed the debris and ruin around the dead woman. There was a 3 month old little boy wrapped in a floral blanket under his mother’s body. She had made the ultimate sacrifice for her son. The little boy was sleeping peacefully when he was found. On opening the blanket the rescue doctor found a mobile phone with a text message on the screen. It said, “If you can survive, you must remember that I love you.”
This is a true story of a mother and her son.
The mother had only one eye and her son despised that. He used to hate looking at her and was embarrassed in front of other people. He never called her to school or invited his friends over. On several occasions he would get angry with her and speak rudely. The mother ran a little shop in a flea market and made little money to keep the home running. One day she went to her son’s school for the annual day. He was so embarrassed and hurt, he cursed her for coming and the following day his friends made fun of his mum with one eye. He hated her so much since then that he wished she would go away or die. He saw her crying one night for what he said to her but he didn’t say anything. Instead he decided that he would work hard and get himself out of that life and away from his mother and their poverty. He studied hard, went to Seoul to get his degree and soon found a good job with an IT company. Some years later he got married and had children of his own. He was living the good life and never thought of the childhood he had or his mother. One day there was a knock on his door and he saw his one eyed mother standing there. He shouted at her and refused to acknowledge that she was his mother. He sent her off and thought that she too didn’t recognise him. He was happy that she left. A few months later he went back to his home town for a school reunion. During this visit he also decided to stop by his own house and see what it was like. When he entered he saw his mother lying on the floor. She had a letter in his hand which read
‘My Son,I think my life has been long enough now. And… I won’t visit Seoul anymore… but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school…. For you… I’m sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you.
You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye… so I gave you mine… I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. The couple times that you were angry with me. I thought to myself, ‘it’s because he loves me.’ I miss the times when you were still young around me .I miss you so much. I love you. You mean the world to me.’
A mother makes sacrifices in times of need like you have seen in the above stories. However, the untold stories are those that happen every day. A mother’s heart beats only for her child and this she demonstrates every hour of everyday through her daily chores, her love for her child and through all the small things she does. Everything she does has another side to it; whether it is cooking the child’s favourite food at the same time ensuring the food is nutritious; buying the child some interesting toys and also ensuring the toys are educational; or sending the child to the best schools/colleges and also ensuring they are safe and secure. From the 3am feeds for a toddler to the 3am distress calls with her newlywed son or daughter, our mothers are always there for us and that will never change through generations, cultures, race or religion.
Happy Mother’s Day Mom….. I know the only way I can thank you for everything you have done for me is by trying to be a mother just like you.
