Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese system of slowly flowing movements and shifts of balance. It started as a pure martial art – for self-defense. However, tai chi has since evolved into an exercise regimen for general fitness, relaxation and reduction of stress.

Chinese philosophy propounds the concept of ‘Chi’ – a vital energy that animates the body. It also describes the yin-yang paradigm – two forces that are complementary, even though they are opposites. Practicing Tai Chi is said to support a healthy balance of yin & yang, thereby aiding the flow of chi, the belief being that by doing so, the health and vitality of the person are enhanced.

The practice of tai chi in modern times, can be considered, a combination of yoga and meditation. It is a physical exercise that focuses the mind, while conditioning the body. The core training involves two primary features: the first being the solo form, a slow sequence of movements which emphasize a straight spine and a natural range of motion; the second being different styles of pushing hands, for training movement principles of the form with a partner and in a more practical manner.

The emphasis in Tai Chi is on being able to channel potentially destructive energy away from one in a manner that will dissipate the energy or send it in a direction where it is no longer a danger. Learners are taught not to directly fight or resist an incoming force, but to meet it in softness and follow its motion while remaining in physical contact until the incoming force of attack exhausts itself or can be safely redirected, meeting yang with yin.

Sustained practice of Tai Chi helps in balance, alignment and flexibility. Practitioners can correct poor posture and bad spinal alignment. Tai Chi strengthens the legs while conditioning the tendons and ligaments of the ankles, knees, and hips, increasing their range of motion and making them more resilient, less prone to injury. The constant weight shifts train balance and body awareness, leading to higher ease of movement within the form and in everyday activities like standing, walking or running. Tai Chi also helps improve circulation and digestion. Other medical benefits include increased oxygen uptake and utilization (more efficient breathing), reduced blood pressure, increased bone density and improved immune function.

Tai Chi is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. It requires no equipment, and can be practiced in fairly small areas.
